Victoria’s Southwest Designs – the History of the Rosary

The rosary dates back to the ninth century, a time when Irish monks, within the walls of their monastery, would chant prayers, including the 150 Psalms of David. Illiterate or otherwise lay people outside of the monastery would hear these psalms and wanted to participate. While they attempted to join in, many could not memorize the long verses. What’s more, they didn’t have access to printed copies.

Around 800 AD, these people began reciting the Lord’s Prayer in response to the monks’ recitation of a Psalm. As the practice gained popularity, common folk began wearing pouches containing 150 stones or pebbles in order to keep track of their prayers when they were not within ear’s distance of the monastery. This pouch eventually evolved to a small rope of 150 knots, which proved less burdensome for Catholic devotees. The rope was later reduced to incorporate only 50 knots.

In later years, Irish monks traveled throughout Europe, taking this form of devotion with them. Common people began reciting the Angelic Salutation – which is part of the Hail Mary. Soon, people began daily reciting 50 Angelic Salutations on a knotted prayer string.

Through the 13th century, the recitation evolved as theologians began interpreting David’s 150 Psalms as prophesies. In order to create better unity, the church created a standard of prayers, dividing the 150 Psalms into decades of 10, with an Our Father recited preceding each.

Today, the Rosary’s origins are still apparent. The number of Hail Marys in the various mysteries still totals 150.

Our rosary designs, though unique and modern, still hold the tradition of the rosary. Take a look at our selection today.
